Despite having a special edition of Snow on my shelf for the last few years, Bone White is actually my first time reading Malfi. I finally put him at the top of my list after listening to the Final Guys praise his work, and I'm glad I did. Bone White is very creepy, well written, cold, and intriguing.
Paul's twin brother vanishes after taking a trip to Alaska to find himself. All Paul knows is that Danny last sent him photos in a small ex-mining town called Dread's Hand. A year later, a hermit there comes out of the woods and admits to killing and burying eight people. An investigation launches and makes national news. Paul thinks Danny must have been one of the victims and leaves for Alaska. Once in Dread's Hand, he finds practically everyone against him. With little aid from the police, he begins his own search for Danny and the truth. What he finds is true evil in those woods.
I loved how this book felt like just as much a moody mystery as it did horror. Ralfi is a fantastic writer with a real knack for characters, dread, and unease. There's a cold atmosphere that surrounds this story in more ways than one, and I felt chilled to my core on more than one occasion, despite little happening in the demonic department until the end. Bottom line, Bone White made a fan out of me. Now I'll have to finally take Snow off my shelf and read it.
